Put on a couple more planks, one really little one, and one really long one. The long one was close enough to the centerline that I had to enlist Laura to hold the clinching iron. I hammered while she held up a big chunk of iron and got a sawdust shower. True love, I'd say.
I started this blog when I was restoring a 1917 Kennebec canoe. Now I have added to my boat building adventures, and built a kayak. I also have pages about birds and astronomy.

Stern seat mounting & patches
I cut spacers to mount the stern seat. These had to be beveled on both ends and drilled through, which took a few tries to get right.
I also resumed patching the planking; starting with a couple of small holes. I picked up some 8 foot western red cedar boards to use where the 6 footers aren't long enough. I found some nice heartwood pieces which match the original wood color better than the other new wood.

Indoors again
The canoe is finally back indoors and in a functioning workshop. We cleared out enough of the garage and got the shop organized (to a point) so the canoe could come in.

Bow planking
I've got enough planking on the bow to hold things together for the trip to our new house on Whidbey Island. This end looks like a canoe again!

First new planking
The first new planking is on! I has been a long time since I worked on the canoe because we are moving to Whidbey Island near Everett, Washington. So my focus has been on house repairs instead of canoe repairs. However, I must do a few things before the canoe is ready to move. I really want some planking holding the stem in place, and at least one end to be planked. I'm going to car top it 1800 miles, and I want a pointy end to slice into the wind. I bought some Yakima canoe supports and straps so it will be held on securely. I have 3 weeks to get ready.

New planking
My first piece of new planking. I spend half an hour running the thickness planer to get a nice stack of planking down to the right thickness. Need to do some bleaching to match the colors.

Left stern ribs and inwale
Some warm weather allowed me to strip the last of the finish in the stern. I'm getting ready to bond a few pieces in place.
I also drilled out the seat hanger holes to clean them up so I can bond in plugs and re-drill to fit the new 3/16 hanger bolts.

Deck, rib, and inwale
Lots of little bits getting fixed today. I spliced a new tip on the stern deck. A small amount of this will show after the cap pieces are on, so matching the color of the wood will need be done.
I've sliced off one rib tip and the end of the left inwale. The inwale is curved, so I'm steaming it to bend it. Since it's small, I'm steaming it in the oven.

Stern deconstruction
I'm tearing down the stern end to fix the inner gunwales, rib tips, stem, and deck. This time I took the deck all the way out. There is more planking on this end, but everything else is a bit worse off. It needs six rib tips and bigger patches to the gunwales and deck.

Switched ends
Not making much progress in the cold. I turned the canoe around to work on the stern stem and deck. This end actually has a few intact planks. The deck needs a bigger patch though.
